A Fancy Night Out

12/5/14 - Being in a long term relationship is an interesting experience to say the very least. They all sorta go through the same steps around the same times and follow a very familiar pattern. That's why I like to throw a game changing and life altering curve ball of dynamite in there every once in awhile and see how things shake out on the other side. Keeps it fun. Moving a country bumpkin from the Mennonite fields of Uniontown to the "big" city of Cleveland seems like something out of a bad remake of Green Acres written by one of the guys from "Soul Plane"... Cedric the Entertainer just woke up for reasons he doesn't understand feeling good about a wet dream he just had. See he's in a lot of bad remakes... and sequels... and movies... Anyways, other than her still working in Green 3-4 days a week after a stint of working 5-7 days a week in Medina, getting her hair done twice a month in Akron, visiting our families twice a month in Stark county, spending birthdays and holidays in the Canton area, and generally being disappointed in Christmas because we can't have 7 live trees in our house because we live in a half a duplex... she does lay her head down every night with me in Cleveland. She goes to the Cleveland Flea every chance she gets. She grabs Brewnuts whenever she wakes up in time on the weekends. She joined a gym up here in our neighborhood. She's gone to countless Cleveland sporting events with me. She shops at the West Side market and even Christmas shopped at Tower City. She eats out with me at Cleveland restaurants and shops at the little boutiques in our neighborhood. She invites everyone to come up and have fun with us in the big city even though few take us up on the offer. The point here is that she took an obvious bad situation for her and continues to try to make the best of it. She participates... and that makes me happy!

So when our 2 year anniversary rolled around I decided to do 3 wonderful things to show her how much I love her and how thankful I am that she doesn't bitch and complain about Cleveland every minute of everyday. One was to show her something fun and new. The second was to fulfill a weird need that she had deep in her soul. The third was to get her jewelry... I mean duh right.

Something Fun and New
Once we were ready, I had Uber pick us up and bring us to the Velvet Tango Room, Cleveland's most hip, stylish, and lavish bar... but to call it a "bar" is sort of a slap in the face. "Speakeasy" maybe? It's certainly a throwback to a better time. It has a club feel like you have to pay a monthly fee and wear its crest on your jacket in order to get in. It's not snooty though... it's deserving of respect.

When we walk in to this somewhat nondescript building in Duck Island, I didn't know what to expect really. I had heard stories of $18 drink minimums and dress codes and secret invitation only back rooms but had never really had a chance to feel like I was ready to enter until now. We were dressed nice and ready to have fun no matter what the cost though... well to a point. We took a deep breath and walked in. The bar area was very very nice and the table area was great too with it's living room setting on the one side. There was a cheese and bread plate and a Jazz duo playing in the back. Patrons varied in age and look but there were no bar bro's or shot skanks.

Your initial feelings of sticking out like a sore white trash thumb slowly faded away as the staff started to interact with us. Everyone working that night was polite and made it very clear that they were there to make sure we got the best drink and had a wonderful time. We had no doubt in our minds that they were looking out for us. We felt as if they were willing to throw an $18 cocktail down the sink and make us a new one, if we were even slightly dissatisfied. It was actually a pretty amazing feeling... especially after the whole Merwin's Wharf fiasco.

They have a large specialty cocktail menu with wine and liquors but no worries about trying to narrow it all down because the wait staff is there to help narrow it down for you. "Oh you like this basic drink? I can recommend these 2 which are similar but way better." That was similar to the conversation that our waitress had with Gina. She ended up getting a very tasty gin drink that I think had the word "lady" in it. I on the other hand needed no such help picking a drink. See every year just after Thanksgiving, a dormant part of my brain wakes up from it's drunkin' 11 month slumber to remind me, much to my surprise every frickin' year, that I love eggnog and it's time to go get some! This was the night that part of my brain woke up. "Oh shit I forgot how much I love eggnog!"... was exactly what I said. Oh and thank God that I did because this was homemade, honest to God, slap your mother eggnog. So good...

Gina and I enjoyed our drinks and had some complimentary cheese and crackers. We listened to the jazz band play and small talked while we took it all in. The senses were all getting just the right amount of attention. Nothing was too loud or bright or anything... all of the pieces fit together perfectly. It was like a spa day for the casual drinker with high end taste...

Then, once we were finished... THE BILL CAME. It was a celebration so I was OK with whatever came with it. It was what you had to do to have an enjoyable night especially when you only see each other fleetingly during the week. The most I've ever paid for a drink was for a $12 Red Bull and Vodka at a Casino in Windsor. No, it did not "give me wings". Think more of the scene from Deuce Bigalow where Norm MacDonald was the bartender. Anyways, yes the cocktails there are $18 to start BUT we somehow lucked out and showed up during Happy Hour where --- wait for it --- all drinks were 50% off!!! Holy shit! Celebrate good times come on!!! Here's the thing though... For the experience, I would have paid $18 for not only that drink but the cheese and crackers, the music, the ambiance, the comfort, the service, and the fact that there is a place like this in Cleveland where you don't have to be a member to get in. Anyone, even 2 schleps like us, can go in, order a delicious drink, and be treated like royalty.

There's a reason why this is the best bar in the city...

Fulfill a Weird Need Deep in Her Soul... Well Stomach.
For months, every time we make plans, Gina floats the idea of going Downtown to Red, the Steakhouse. For months, I've had to deflect these urges of hers. Why? Because A) It's not a grab some food on the go kinda place. It's the swanky new steakhouse in town. It's a get dressed up (OK, Ohio dressed up), invest your time, order appetizers, and ingest a steak that will put you into an erotic meat coma for the rest of the night. Oh and B) I needed to make sure that this was going to be her first time there... and it was a surprise... and she guessed it on the 2nd try while we were sitting at the VTR (Velvet Tango Room)... and I lied and said she was wrong. HA!

Red's is at the south end of East 4th Street which, if you can't be on it, is an awesome location. Lots of foot traffic, close to Gateway for the stadium crowd (and the RNC folks), close to the Casino for the gamblers, oh and right across the street from where the nuCLEus project is going up. They have a rooftop bar! That's like having a convertible version of your favorite sports car in this city. Their colors are red and black and if you knew me in the early 90's, go Falcons!... but only because of their colors and Deion Sanders.

It had been a long time since I was at a proper steakhouse so I was practically drooling in Uber on the way there. I was like a large dog in any movie, just slobbering out the window on cars behind us. You know the Steak is gonna be good too, obviously, or it would be called like a "Salad Wedge" house or a "Soup and Bread sticks" house. I will admit though, in addition to a delicious steak, the appetizers and sides were not only large but the portion size was ridiculous!

I got the shrimp which could have been prawns or fat american shrimp from Nebraska but they were huge. Oh and don't let the picture fool you, I ate about 4 before Gina had the idea to take a pic of some food porn. Gina got the 1/2 dozen raw oysters and was as amazed as I was to see how big they were! Now I can't say much for me but this girl gets oysters anywhere she can find them and in her 29 years on this earth she hadn't seen any that big. I know this because she said it like 18 times.

Needless to say both apps were tasty and almost too filling. I recommend getting one to share unless you're ready to rock and roll like I was. Oh steakhouses, how I've missed you so.

Our next course was the main event and it didn't disappoint. The steaks came out perfectly cooked and seasoned and tasted great with A1!... HaHa just kidding... about the A1. These steaks were good. My bone in rib eye special, as you can see in the picture, was the size of a small Italian sedan and Gina's filet was not very wide but was twice as thick as mine.

As for the sides, the seasoned fries were very good and there were a lot of them. Think Greenhouse seasoning but not as garlic-y. The underdog winner of most surprisingly good food was the creamed spinach! This stuff was wonderful and easily the best I've ever had... which is out of like eating it 4-5 times in my life but don't let that sway you. It was good there at the table and good warmed up the next night on some chicken breast. Who knew?

This course overall was impressive and flavorful. I sometimes make the mistake of thinking the bigger, the better with steak but Gina's packed just as much flavor, if not more, than mine did. I make the same recommendation with the sides as I do with the apps. Get one and share. They are big.

The cute little end to the meal that really put an exclamation point on the whole night was the free dessert and the "Happy Anniversary" that was written on the plate in chocolate. I can't say enough about our waiter who walked us through our orders and recommended some delicious food. He was attentive and friendly even though the place was full on a Friday night. Gina made sure everyone knew it too on the way out because he deserved the recognition. If the rest of their wait staff is half as good as he was, this place will be in good hands for a long time. Bravo to them and to Red the Steakhouse! It was a wonderful experience and all their acclaim is well deserved.

Oh Cleveland, thanks for having awesome places to go. Goooooooooood night now! Hearts and thoughts they fade... fade away...

Indians vs Angles - Swisher Sweet

6/19/2014 - Cleveland Indians vs LA Angels

My work (which in no way shares in or promotes my opinions on this blog) gave employees a $25 ticket (which included a $5 voucher) to an Indians game last week. The tickets were in the left field bleachers but it's early in the baseball season still which means that there are lots of good seats and standing areas to move to to watch the game... you know, if you do that sorta stuff... I for sure do not!... probably.

My co-worker Eli met me at my place and we hiked the 15 mins through the flats to Jacob... Progressive field to watch the game. It was a great day for baseball! The temp was in the 80's and early rain had cleared out most of the humidity. Hot in the sun and cool in the shade. The perfect weather for getting paid to be at the ballpark!

The game for the most part was pretty par for the course. We paid attention as long as we could and then went to eat and roam around. I decided to not eat lunch beforehand so that I could partake in some ballpark hot dogs. With my $5 food voucher it seemed like a great idea to get 3! After eating we camped out on the Home Run porch in left to watch a few innings. I do love watching the Indians live. I grew up going to some great games in this ballpark and feel some sort of connection to it and comfort with it. I haven't been to too many games over the past few years because it's just so damn expensive. Thank goodness work gives us discounted tickets to sporting events sometimes because it has allowed me become a fan again. It's definitely one of the perks to working for a hometown employer that advertises!

Snuck down while the security guy was taking a dump. Great view!

I'll cut to the chase on this one since I'm writing about a baseball game... The Indians were down by a run in the bottom of the 10th. The bases were loaded and there were 2 outs. Nick Swisher was up and was 0-4 for the day. Now I'll digress a bit but only to add my own little bit of sports magic to the story... Before we left, Gina asked me to pick her up a jersey since "your sister lost a bunch of weight and can fit into the one she gave me again so I had to give it back." Indian giver of an Indian's jersey... yup. So while wandering around about mid game, I stopped into the women's pink ribbon tight-fitting bedazzled gift shop. After coming to the conclusion that whatever I get Gina she wouldn't like but would pretend to, I got her a Nick Swisher jersey/shirt thingy. I think women think he's hot and she usually likes guys that all women think are hot so I went with it... now fast forward back to us sitting in way better seats than what we started out with and Swisher at bat. Now watch the video to see what I made happen with my purchase:

I've never seen a walk off grand slam in person before this but I have to tell you... it was awesome! I haven't really cheered that hard and loud in that stadium in some time. It was a good feeling. It was great high 5'ing strangers and Whhhoooooing as loud as I could. It was great to see him getting mobbed at home plate. It's nice to feel anything positive about Cleveland sports these days. I have to say that one of the great perks to living in Cleveland has been being able to easily get to these things. Oh and not having to leave early to beat traffic... I'd have missed this little gem if I did.

My next great sports adventure will be on Thursday (6/26) when Gina and I go to the Cavs draft party at the Q! You can't beat free tickets... that should be my catch phrase. I say it enough. Oh and if you wanted proof of my sports magic...
You get'em girl!

Neighbors Make a Difference Day

5/14/2014 - I promised myself that, if I did get the opportunity to move to Cleveland, I would do more volunteer work than my 0 hours in previous years. Sure this blog does some good by getting the word out to about 30 people and shows some of them the benefits of living in Cleveland... but it's all just talk, if I don't go out and do something to better my community. My 1st opportunity, Neighbors Make a Difference Day.

This is actually the first time I've heard of this day but it make sense since it seems to be a Key/Indians community outreach thing. One day a month or 2 ago my co-worker Eli came to me and asked if I was volunteering for Neighbors day. After he explained what that was, I didn't really have to think about whether to do it or not. I got to put a check next to the volunteering pledge I made myself AND... I got to miss a half a day of work! No-brainer in my mind. There were a list of projects that we could sign up for but because I'm new here and only know a handful of people, I said to just sign me up for whatever he was doing.

Not choosing a Cleveland project myself didn't disappointed me too much but only because I had a tie to where I was volunteering... Parma! Yes, my old stomping grounds and home to the pink flamingo yard decoration. We were going to pick up garbage and do some mulching at the West Creek Reservation Metro Parks off of Broadview and Ridgewood. Parts of the reservation were a dump long ago but now it is a beautiful 324 acre park with trees and paths and the newly built Keystone Reserve Shelter which is a pretty amazing picnic pavilion and our meeting place. It's rented out a year in advance so make your reservations for this little reservation today. Booo to word play!

When I pulled up the rain was just stopping and it was starting to get warm again. It was almost like Mother Nature knew I was going to be outside. Her and I have a thing. I got out of the car with my boots on ready to walk in some mud and pick up garbage. The first thing I noticed was that I was the only one not wearing a red shirt... I must have missed that part of the e-mail. Oops. No worries though. I zipped up my green jacket and just kept repeating "Sorry, I'm new." Needless to say I won't be making any promotional pictures or videos this year. All that handsomeness wasted.

The Metro Parks guy got us organized and off we went. Eli and I worked our way around the park picking up all sorts of goodies - beer and pop bottles, a pair of shoes, a flip flop, candy wrappers, underwear with skulls on it (Gina!), you know... fun stuff. I found a lot of Rolling Rock cans out there which must be the drink of choice for Parma burnouts partying in the woods. Back in my day we drank Zima but that was a different more care free time. I felt compelled to put a link in there for Zima after watching a recent Modern Family. Anyways, we covered a lot of ground, shot the shit, and filled our bags with garbage. We both began to notice the cold breeze that started to blow through the park around the same time and decided to head back to the pavilion before the downpour came. Again, thanks to my mythical boo Mother Nature, we arrived just in time to be out of the tsunami that hit the area like a watery freight train.

Even though my volunteering day was cut short by rain, it felt good. I selflessly did something for the benefit of the community. Volunteering is they way that the little things get done. It's the way parks stay beautiful, neighborhoods stay together, and people show that they truly care about the area that they live in. If you have the time, pick a project and volunteer your time for the betterment of your surroundings. Don't even worry about it being too small or insignificant. It's all about being a part some something positive.

I'll also be volunteering for the Gay Games in August so, if you stop down, look for me and say HI! I'll know more about where and when soon. I'm trying to work Ping Pong and Volleyball that the Convention Center or the Festival Village on Mall C.

In other news, I'm unfortunately going to miss the Cleveland Asian Festival for the 1st time in 3 years this weekend. I love this festival but have way too much going on Saturday to make it and then I'm flying out Sunday to Dallas for work. It's the fastest growing cultural festival in the state, is free to attend, and includes free parking! The food is top notch, the merch is great, and they always seem to get the best Asian entertainment. It also draws festival goers into an area that you may not usually hear about on the news or get into during a visit. AsiaTown is a neighborhood just northwest of CSU on the other side of 90. If you love Asian food or culture, you have to go to this festival. If you can't make it (like me) pick an afternoon and go to one of the many restaurants and/or indoor malls in the area. It way more authentic than what you find in a suburban strip mall. This little gem doesn't get the recognition that it deserves but it really should.

Gladiators [45] - Kiss [42]

5/10/14 - On Saturday night Gina and I went to watch our Arena Football League team, the Cleveland Gladiators, play the L.A. Kiss at Quicken Loans Arena. I've never been to see an AFL game before but I got free tickets from work so... I dragged Gina on a walk through the flats to the Q to cheer on our undefeated football team (7-0). Man feels good to say that!
First impressions...

This game is quick and exciting! It's almost all passing and a WR's able to get a running start before the snap, you get some nice deep passes and quick scores. The field is also half as long as a pro field which only adds to the crazy offensive pace. It doesn't hurt either that you can play a kick off of the end zone nets. You really only get a chance to breathe when there are timeouts! The players aren't bums or old men like the Replacements either, so don't think that. Cleveland's got a great team and some of the players are really good and exciting to watch.

Gladiator games are kinda like Cavs game in that they have gimmick or event nights and do some sort of give-a-way during most timeouts. The event that night was the "wear pink for cancer awareness" campaign. I participated by wearing the closest thing to a pink shirt that I had. It was also $2 beer night. I participated by choking down about 5 Yuengling lights before Gina saved my taste buds by buying me a Labbats. Sorry folks. It's a Pittsburgh beer that tastes like pee... and that's coming from someone who drinks Coors so suck it!

The game wasn't a sell out but there were way more people there than I thought there were going to be. There were fans with their faces painted, some were in costume, but most were casual fans of sport. There were a lot of young kiddos and families there as well which was great. At the end it really didn't matter why we were there though. The Gladiators kicked the game winning field goal as time expired and the place erupted in unison like we had won the Superbowl... and only we in the Q knew it. Cleveland fans, tormented for so many years, always need a reason to cheer and even though it was just a regular season AFL game, we were winners... and undefeated! By the way that "just" was in no way to lessen the AFL game experience or the league in general. It was a great experience and I'll be back for sure. The ticket prices are more than affordable. The games are fast paced and fun to watch. The staff, announcers, and cheerleaders keep you entertained during breaks. It's indoors so you don't have to face the Cleveland weather! Get your tickets and make a night of it! Dinner, game, and then casino! Unless you have kids then maybe no casino... and definitely no dinner at the Tilted Kilt...

I'll post my video of the winning field goal, if you want to see it, on YouTube and this post a little later today when I can connect to WiFi. UPDATE: Which is now...

Side story... so the LA Kiss (if you can't tell by the name) are owned by a group that includes Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock band KISS. Pretty awesome right! They have flames as the trim on their black and grey uniforms and their logo includes the KISS logo. Oh and these guys are the mascots... except me... I'm just cool!
Best picture ever!

A Dedication for Dendrite

The pre-ceremony group. Click the image to enlarge it.

5/9/2014 - Thank goodness for the Tremont West Development Corp's e-mail or I would have missed the shindig in my front yard today! Our home's mascot Dendrite, which I've written about on occasion, got herself a coming out party. All the bigwigs were there to pay their respects and take some photos. Mayor Jackson, Councilman Cimperman, some people from Tremont West Development Corp, Land Studio, and the artist and mother of Dendrite, Olga Ziemska.
There was a good size crowd that gathered around Dendrite. I heard a lot of "What do you think it means?" from the group. I got to talk to a few of the onlookers and their thoughts ranged from "Love it" to "Waste of taxpayer money". I have no idea why these people showed up with such a bad outlook but to each their own I guess. It was nice to meet some neighborhood people and shoot the shit for awhile before things kicked off. Oh and they definitely wanted to make sure that I went to the block party at the end of the month at Press Wine Bar. If I'm back from training in Dallas, I will be there.

The speeches were short but well spoken. The TV20 camera guys took the angle down the street so that they could get the city skyline in the shot. Olga did a great job explaining her sculpture and made a nice speech which included an explanation of the sculpture's meaning. Mayor Jackson, as always, made a great speech and was very friendly with everyone in the crowd. He even shook my hand right before he left! Councilman Cimperman came in and set the place on fire. His personality is something to be admired. Friendly, outgoing, and ready at a moment's notice to come in and speak from the heart. He had to run or I would have shaken his hand too. Next time. He follows me on twitter.

All in all it was a great little ceremony and I couldn't be happier that it was right in my front yard... Oh and that it didn't downpour on us. Just a few sprinkles. I love that I keep putting myself in these situation. I find it exhilarating to see first hand a city rising up to be great once again. I couldn't have lucked into being in a better place during a better time.

Here are some pictures that I took from my front porch...

Reason #5 for Moving to Cleveland - I'm a Sucker for an Underdog

When I was in Little Leopards... for those of you who don't know what that is (you're blessed), that was the name of the pee wee or Pop Warner football league I played in between grades 5-8... I was about the same height as I am now and probably twice as strong and fast. I hit puberty at about 3 and hit it like a freight train. I was a man among boys and I. was. awesome... but enough glory days talk. In 5th and 6th grade pops helped coach the team. He had coached JV and HS ball when he was younger and scouted at different times in his life so he knew his shit. He was tough too. Before practice, we talked football. After practice, we talked football. While I was dreaming, there we were talking football. And I get it too. Who knew that my growth spurt would end abruptly at age 13. I could have kept growing and became a college player or maybe even a pro! That was kinda the Little Leopard dream especially if you were a 2nd or even 3rd generation to play. You had generations of failed pro sports dreams pushing you to be the best you could be.

Now don't mistake this for the "My daddy's the coach so I get play short stop" bullshit. I'd got way more "do better's" than I got "Atta boy's". I had to fight for every sliver of attention during practice... I was a selfish kid looking for daddy attention, so what. Instead of bathing me in glorious praise like I wanted, he worked hard with the kids who needed it most like any good coach does. He was instantly there for the kids who had to walk 45 mins to practice. He slapped those runts on the back who hadn't and would probably never hit a growth spurt to take them over 5' 2". He was there to brush the dirt clumps off of the kids who had to wear a XL t-shirt with mustard and bong water stains as a jersey.

Now if you were to ask my dad, he'd tell you that you have to help yourself and go after your dreams and rah rah but in all of his stories I didn't really remember hearing about someone picking him up by his bootstraps when he was at his lowest and cheering him forward. Maybe the Air Force? I never really had thought that this was a learned thing except he was a teacher but I really didn't have much insight into that part of his life. My 12 year old mind didn't have the tools to see what was going on. All I knew was that I had to keep trying harder and harder to get some attention. I had no idea though that at the time my father was falling victim to one of the famous Vozar personality quirks. We fucking love an underdog! We love being one of the few on the front lines when the victory trumpets go off and our weak and feeble band of losers stand victorious over the seasoned veteran juggernauts fair and square. It can be in anything too. Sports, chess, cards, life, it doesn't matter what. We want to say that we helped you make the decision to take the road less traveled and cheered you on until you figured out that by doing so, it made all the difference. Then we'll high five you!

Now if you know me, I instantly hate what everybody else likes. I don't just jump on fads because they're popular. I like to do my research and if I do end up liking something, I kinda sneak up on the band wagon and just before it gets to top speed I JUMP on it and join in with everyone. Now it's not universal with everything in my life but I have made a conscious effort to play devil's advocate with pop culture. I saw my roommates do it in college and it almost added this whole other dimension to their personality... and in college my personality was .135-D. Not even 1-D let alone 3-D. My nickname was "Silent Sam" and I had nothing going for me. I liked everything everyone else liked so there was no real reason to have an honest to God discussion with anyone because everyone thought the same. It was the small town mentality and was as bland as the unflavored Almond milk Gina brought over this week. Like drinking purified air.
My saving grace was that I was funny but unfortunately for me I lived with some ruthlessly funny bastards. I was a knock knock joke and they were Sam Kinison. They could take what you liked the most and make you second guess that and your whole entire life in just a night. A lot of times they liked the same thing they were ripping on but it was for the entertainment of the group... minus the few that were in their cross-hairs. It was like a great fighter punching himself out of a corner and knocking 3 guys out. Oh and God forbid you fight back. That only got you in deeper. It was really quite a thing to watch. Just ruthless... but the next day we knew it was all in good fun. We brushed off our shoulders, kept drinking, and watched wrestling. No hard feelings.
Now that's not the origin story of that personality trait but it is where I honed my craft and saw it as something that I could add to my empty bag of mental weapons. When you play that way though, you have to have things in your life that you like that are off radar. You do not want them to become ammunition. No one can know anything about it and if they do, they need to know very little while you know a lot. You'll need to have that tiny upper hand if shit got to that point. It was fun going back and forth like that but in order to be good, I had to take a look at my life and shed some dead weight. No worries, if you knew me then and know me now, I'm basically the same. I really didn't have to jettison anything too important.

All of this gets me to where I'm at right now. Cleveland is the underdog city and that's my kind of town. It's the punchline of joke after joke. Hell we've heard them all and baby... they're all old and worn out. It doesn't even hurt to have them directed towards you as much as is hurts to hear jokes as lame as a chicken crossing the road over and over again. Even the nice things people say about the city are just hidden insults that you may not even notice. "This city has grit"... Thanks rich people for the scraps of a compliment. Unless you're helping us out please, shut up and continue enjoying being rich. Move into city limits and pay taxes... then you can say anything you want. This city is like any other city out there. It has a past, a present, and a future and even though we may not be proud of where we've been, we need to stand up and take notice of where we're going. Unfortunately there aren't more people out there that treat cities like my dad treated pee wee football players. He didn't get paid, he was a relentless cheerleader, and the more you needed him there... the more he was there. We're not the rich kids who came from a successful family and had every perk growing up but we were great once... and we can be again. We just have to continue to fight 3 guys out of this corner.

Random Events this summer in Cleveland 2014

I've never been to this event but wanted to promote it because I think it's a great thing for the city to be known for. That being said, I had to copy paste a little from other sites. Sorry other sites...

The Fashion Week Cleveland is turning 10 this year and it's celebrating with a week-long series of fashion shows, style events, and educational programs that will be held May 30 - June 7. The event has become a highly anticipated vehicle for introducing the work of American designers to a wider public.
Fashion Week Cleveland is known as the "educational fashion week" and has become the most significant industry event between New York and Los Angeles.
-Women's Wear Daily
Cleveland plays host to one of the few internationally recognized fashion industry events in North America. Fashion Week Cleveland is considered to be the best show in the Midwest and second only to New York’s extravaganza.
-Movoto.com
The event incorporates runway shows, exhibits, films, industry tours, seminars and workshops at cultural institutions, universities, and museums. Get your tickets now because like the past 9 years, it will sell out.

Million Dollar Quartet is coming to Playhouse Square Jul 8 - Aug 3. If you're a fan Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, or just Rock and Roll in general, then this is the play to see. In 1956 they were all at Sun Records in Memphis at the same time. They play tons of classics and us young folk get to see a piece of music history that I for one had no idea of. I saw it on Broadway and it was amazing.

Get your tickets now and make an evening of it! Enjoy dinner at Cibreo Italian Kitchen, Cowell and Hubbard, or any of the other great restaurants in the area. Give yourself some time after your meal to walk around and check out the new arches, lights, signs, and of course the GE chandelier.

Gay Games 9 is one of the biggest sports and cultural festivals in the world and it's happening in Cleveland and Akron Aug 09 - Aug 16. The 35 sports and 2 cultural events are open to anyone no matter what sexual orientation you are. Lance Bass, Broadway actress Andrea McArdle, and the Pointer Sisters will be a part of the Opening Ceremony spectacular at Quicken Loans Arena. The events will be all around the area so get out to the one nearest to you, cheer on these athletes, and support Cleveland and Akron. Mega events like this don't come around here that often so show your support! Get your tickets now by checking out the tickets page although most of the events are free for spectators. Thank you Gay Games for choosing Cleveland!

Gogol Bordello is playing the House of Blues on July 28. OK you may think that this is not your cup of tea but let me tell you that hearing an eastern European accent sing punk with gypsy-style calliope rock in the background hits an ancient piece of my Slavic eardrum like a tuning fork! Their music has been background noise to a lot of fun drunken nights and lends itself to such. It's fast, defiant, melodic, and it makes me want to sing along while dancing like a one of the Bushwhackers from the WWF mixed with Billy Joe Armstrong on stage in the early 90's. If you're feeling adventurous, get a group of friends together, go eat at pig's head at The Greenhouse Tavern on E 4th street, wash it down with a few Great Lakes beers, and go see Gogol Bordello at the House of Blues. Grab your tickets here. Damn you know how to party!

Dazzle the District

5/2/14 - Playhouse Square scored big time on their opportunity to make their neighborhood a honest to God recognizable destination. They took their already highly successful neighborhood and brand and turned it into a place to go even if you don't have a ticket to a show. It wasn't meant to rhyme. It just did. Any who, after months of planning and preparation we Clevelanders started to see things get finished along Euclid Ave. New signs for the theaters, a new old-school sign on a building top, other random signage, and new arches that greet you at the entrances to the neighborhood.

The last piece that went up was definitely the most controversial and talked about outdoor decoration probably in Cleveland history. It's the GE chandelier and it's the biggest outdoor chandelier in the world. It was to be the crowning jewel of the neighborhood and the city's newest tourist attraction. Many complained that this was unnecessary in a city where poverty and crime are so high and roads were so badly chewed up but I for one love the idea. It sets Playhouse Square up for success in the future and builds upon an already strong entertainment based neighborhood by turning it into a destination inside and out. The chandelier is famous now (it's in the Guinness Book of World Records) and that's waaaaaay better than being known for a burning river. With events like the Gay Games, the Transplant Games, and possibly a political convention coming up (Not to mention Wrestlemania... serious get that done!), neighborhoods like Playhouse Square that can stick out on the map like this become a place for tourists and visitors to just casually go to and enjoy. You can come to playhouse Square to sight see for free and then maybe stay for the food, drinks, and plays.

The Dazzle the District event was the party that Playhouse Square threw to unveil the new additions and celebrate the success of the neighborhood. They shut down the streets, got a band (Hot Chelle Rae) to perform, and showed off a little bit of that glitz and glamour that they're known so well for. The turnout was impressive given that there was an Indians game and a Cher concert going on at the same time. The event was free but everything inside was "special event" priced. The lines were fairly manageable though and everyone seemed in great spirits. The booze choices were abundant with not only beer but wine, champagne, and some sort of canned mixed drink. I didn't get a chance to sample the food because I just got too hungry around 2 pm to hold out any longer... so I ate Chinese for lunch. Completely spoiled my appetite  My only complaint was the lack of bathroom facilities especially since anyone to the right of the stage (Me) was trapped in by the VIP gated off area and a wall of human beings so thick that it took me 15 excruciating minutes to navigate it while having to pee. It was literally only 20 feet and people were jammed in to the point where they had to be just inappropriately touching all sorts of parts. I'm sure the notion of port-a-potties made most of the Playhouse Square board swoon and faint so I can understand why there weren't any... to a point.
After the concert portion of the festivities, they finally got to the unveiling and showing off. After I had peed behind a dumpster in an alley, I circled around to the far back where I knew I could escape if I needed to. The choirs, songs, and performances were pretty entertaining. Everyone cheered and applauded... for awhile but it did drag on. Cheers of "Light it up!" roared from the crowd from time to time. I didn't mind since I was being entertained and really, I was just happy to be there. These are the kind of events that I moved to Cleveland to be closer to and to take part in.

I did my best to get in position to get the best view of when they lit up the chandelier. It wasn't quite as crowded in the area I was standing in so you could wiggle in between groups to get a better view. After some maneuvering I finally found a great spot. I had my phone out and my camera fired up and ready to go. The problem was... THEY TRICKED US! Everyone was looking at the fireworks and the arches lighting up on the east side of the event area. Only the gasps of the people in the crowd smart enough not to break eye contact with the chandelier told everyone that it had happened! This is the video I did capture once I turned around:

Dazzle the District is the kinda party that you're supposed to throw when you have an unveiling that's this good. The excitement of the crowd was at a fever pitch. The entertainment was great and the payoff was top notch. Congratulations Cleveland! You did it up right.

Happy Hour! - Lolita

Who doesn't love a good happy hour after work right? $2 domestics and a $5 breaded fish ball appetizer to help take your mind off the day and the stress off your pocket book. In a neighborhood like Tremont, where every restaurant has a celebrity chef as an owner and pushes the envelope on not only exotic food but ambiance, I usually take advantage of the cheaply priced food and drinks of a happy hour. Sure you pay less and get a limited menu but the food is still 4-star!

Lolita
Don't try to Google Lolita or their happy hour menu at work. You get a visit from the network security group and weird looks from the parents in your office. Instead, click on my links and check out Michael Symon's Tremont restaurant. Hey, remember when I was on TV talking about him? Good times...

When I decided to get some happy hour treats from here as my first ever visit, I assumed 2 things:
  1. I needed to get there right when it started to avoid the crowds
  2. I needed to go home and put on a tie because everything I've heard about this place screamed fancy
That being said, I went right home from work, put on a tie, and got there at 5:01 pm... now right about now is the time that you're expecting me to say "and I didn't have to do either" right? The jury is still out on this one but in a way that benefited me.

I did get there right when happy hour began on a Wednesday which is when people who can afford the place are still at work. It definitely was a sparser crowd than I expected but that's a good thing because I just went in and sat down. There were people at the bar but it wasn't full. There were a few tables taken but again, wasn't full. The waiter was attentive and the staff was right where they needed to be to be able to help you. If one of them was away, someone else stepped right in.

The young guy sitting next to me at the bar had jeans and a t-shirt on which I don't fault him for. More power to ya buddy! The 2 businessmen sitting to my left waiting for the rest of their group where in suits with snazzy haircuts. The greeter was in an odd combo but it looked expensive. I mean who am I to judge women's fashion, right? Especially when no clothes is better than whatever clothes.

So to sum up happy hour here, get there early and during the week to avoid the crowds. Plus they won't deny you at the door if you're not dressed up but show a little respect and at least have golf casual on. This is based on my experience and yours may be different... duh.

The menu has some interesting items on it but interesting in the way in which you think to yourself, "Damn, I've never seen those put together like that... but I bet it's good!" Luckily for me my decision wasn't too hard. If there's two things about my eating habits that are universal, they are:
  1. I'll eat anything with goat cheese on it. Anything.
  2. I will choose a burger with a fried egg on it over one that doesn't have one every time.
Now that you know this, you won't be surprised to find out that I ordered the Lolita burger and the 1/2 Mac & Cheese.

The Lolita burger has all my favorite things on it: hand made patty, some vinegary tasting onions, bacon, cheddar, and a fried egg. Oh and it comes out on a buttery English muffin... ya you heard me! Now I say this to you all and don't take it lightly... Best freaking burger I've ever had - hands down. If I didn't know it existed, it's something I'd make for myself and I'd buy all of those ingredients to do it too. Now I couldn't make it as well as a professional chef mind you but I'd try. So good!

Ok, so I've gushed over the best burger ever blah blah BUT I also got the half Mac & Cheese which, let me tell you, was almost just as awesome. Spiral noodles, goat cheese, rosemary, and chicken. I went back and forth between this and the best burger ever... I mean I had to. I cleansed my pallet with a sip of $2 beer between bites so the 2 awesome flavors didn't adversely interact with each other and could stay independently awesome. If you've never had goat cheese, take off your habit and chastity belt, crawl out from whatever rock you where living under, and go to Lolita for the their $5 happy hour Mac & Cheese! You will be converted. You're welcome.

I swear to God who ever came up with these 2 dishes (Michael or someone else) goes into my dreams a la Freddy Kruger and sees what I eat in that dream where I get to HS after my surgery re-coop and forget my locker combination... oh and am nude. What I'm saying here is that these are my favorite ingredients and they are prepared perfectly for me by someone who is now a food God in my eyes.

2 plates, 2 beers, no wait... $15. Oh and it's a block away from my apartment. You be jealous right now!

Tremont Farmers Market

4/29/14 - I headed to the Tremont Farmers Market at Lincoln Park on Tuesday to check it out and enjoy the nice weather between rain storms. The weather was nice enough to wear shorts so I did!

Lincoln Park is a great venue for any sort of outdoor entertainment. There's a ton of open space, some well placed shade trees, a gazebo in the middle, a kids playground area, and even a pool. It's the neighborhood's back yard since most of the houses don't have much of a yard to speak of. That's just the way things were when the houses were built. It seemed like everyone was either running or walking a dog. The jungle gym area was full of playful kids and watchful moms. It was just a great spring day just to be outdoors.

I decided to take my time in the park before I got to the vendors. I strolled down the park's walkways and took it all in. This was my neighborhood now. Truth be told, I still kinda feel like I'm on vacation. Mostly because my all white apartment walls don't have any pictures on them and I have this nagging feeling to get outside and enjoy every last second before it's over... so I enjoyed my stroll. I even made friends with a tiny white dog who was strangely excited to see me. I could have easily fit him in a coin purse. I called him cute and he probably barked something similar to "Sir, your hair looks awesome". Don't quote me on that. I haven't spoke dog since I dated that girl in college. Ba-Dum-Ching! I was too fat to date in college so no one gets offended. Good times.

I made it up to the vendors and browsed for a bit. It's early in the season so there wasn't a ton of fresh produce but there were breads, cheeses, and jams. The thing I loved the most was that everyone was really nice and no one was pushy. It made me think of how much I disliked the market area Gina and I went to in Mexico because everyone was like a cell phone salesman at a mall kiosk. No one would leave you alone. This farmers market was completely on the other end of the spectrum.

I wish I was wealthier because everything looked real good. I did have a corn-dog calling my name when I got home though so I passed by the easily eatables. I did pick up a jar of marinara sauce for some spaghetti I plan on making and some homemade dirty chai almond milk. I was told that the almond milk had caffeine in it and to drink only half of the container at a time. That's good news because I like the boost of energy in the morning. The one thing I've noticed since I moved in is that the convenience stores in the area are really expensive. I'm going to have to give up my gas station breakfast of an energy drink and a meal replacement bar or 2. It's OK because that got really expensive at times. I stopped at Walmart and got a huge bag of cereal and some almond milk for breakfast and now I have some chai energy to get me through the day.

On a side note, my internet is on its way! I signed up for FreedomPop. You buy the wireless router up front (Find the >> special deal << like I did and get it for $39) and get the 1st month of 8X speed for up to 10 GB for free. After that you get 10 GB per month for around $20. You can also get 5 GB per month for around $15 or the basic package for around $10. I know there's a plan where you can get free internet for up to 1 GB a month too but I think that's gonna be too slow for me. Ask me about it in a few months when I'm broke. I'll be an expert. I like that you can install it yourself and you can change your plan whenever you want. I use an antenna for TV and Roku for Netflix and Hulu Plus. $56 for internet and TV is a pretty damn good deal if I do say so myself. I'll let you know how it all goes.
